Should phones be locked away during lessons?

I would say yes — during lessons, not during the whole day. Last term my class tried a simple box at the door. The first week felt rude. Then we finished discussions without three people filming the board. Exceptions should exist: a parent’s emergency call through the office. A total ban in the playground is another debate. For sixty-minute lessons, a box is a small fence around attention.

Is required volunteering still meaningful?

It can be, if the hours are real work, not a signature. I packed rice at a bank for three hours and understood the queue. A classmate collected stamps from an uncle’s shop. When schools count both as the same JUPAS line, meaning leaks out. Keep a modest requirement, but demand a short reflection and a supervisor who was actually there.

Are 24-hour study rooms a solution or a symptom?

They are both. They solve a practical problem: a warm desk without buying a drink. They also show that we have accepted 1 a.m. as normal for sixteen-year-olds. I would keep a room open until eleven, with a last-admission time, and talk honestly about sleep. A desk is good. A culture that never switches off is not.

Should AI be allowed in coursework if the process is shown?

I would allow it, with a paper trail. Last term I used a chatbot to list counter-arguments on landfills, then I crossed out two that were fake and wrote my own harbour example. That is a calculator. What I would ban is a pasted essay with no draft. Teachers can ask for a three-minute oral: “explain paragraph two without the screen.” If you can, the tool helped. If you cannot, it replaced you. Banning the software entirely just pushes it into the bedroom where nobody teaches judgement.

Do group projects teach teamwork or hide uneven work?

Both, unless the teacher designs against hiding. In my last project one person made the slides at 1 a.m. and three of us smiled in the photo. Teamwork would be a shared doc with timestamps, a five-minute individual viva, and a mark that can differ inside the group. I still want group work — hospitals and offices are not solo exams — but a single shared grade teaches the wrong lesson: find a competent classmate and disappear.

Is a four-day school week a good idea in Hong Kong?

I am doubtful, at least as a copy of overseas trials. Our days are already long because of commuting and tutorials. Removing Monday without touching those would just squeeze five days of content into four, and parents would buy another tutorial slot. A better first step is a later start on two days, or one afternoon with no homework, and then measure sleep. Importing a four-day slogan without changing the rest of the week is decoration.

Should unpaid internships longer than two weeks be banned?

Yes, or they should become credited modules with a mentor. My classmate interned for a month formatting slides. She could afford the MTR; another friend took night shifts and arrived already tired. “Experience” that filters by family cashflow is not a ladder. Short job-shadowing days can stay unpaid. Once you are doing real hours, pay the minimum wage or put it on the timetable as school.

Is a silent library more useful than a discussion zone?

We need both, labelled honestly. I cannot learn a proof next to a video call. I also cannot plan a group presentation in a tomb. Last year our library mixed the two and everyone was slightly angry. A silent room and a talk room, even if each is small, beats one large room with a “please be considerate” poster that nobody can enforce.
